On his return from San Luis Obispo, Neal typed Kerouac a long letter of reminiscences of his life in Denver following his release from the Colorado State Reformatory in 1945. Known as the “Joan Anderson” letter, it had a free-flowing conversational approach that was much praised by Kerouac, who later claimed that it directly inspired the style he adopted in his April 1951 scroll type-script of On the Road. The original letter is lost, and the fragment that follows is estimated to be less than half of the total.173
